Lavamae mobile showers for the homeless (San Francisco)
HighJinx. Located in Ottawa’s Chinatown, HighJinx is a vintage housewares shop that is actually a front for a social movement of neighbours helping neighbours. As a non-traditional social service, HighJinx directs all income generated by the shop into initiatives to help our vulnerable neighbours, including those transitioning into housing. Karen Neilson and Leigh Reid, the ladies of HighJinx, provide a furniture/housewares bank and a food cupboard, as well as advocacy, case management and crisis intervention services. Most importantly, HighJinx provides a gathering place for the community – a place for neighbours to drop in for conversation and social interaction. It’s not a store with a living room, as much as it is a living room with a store! |
